Around The World on Three Underwear
About the Story
Traveling Globally for Maximum Enjoyment with Minimal Expenses
Darryl Gopaul's "Around The World on Three Underwear" is an instructive and
humorous guide to traveling around the world without spending a fortune.
Story
Around The World on Three Underwear is an autobiographical journal of the five-month trek
that he and his partner, Daphne, made around the world. The book clearly explains how any adult
can do the same, enjoying unlimited travel satisfaction on a limited budget.
Darryl and Daphne Gopaul, a middle-aged couple from Canada, decided that they were not going to let a lack of funds prevent them from exploring the globe. So they chose a number of countries in which they had been especially interested, and then began their fascinating journey. But they did not venture out without first planning ahead, and figuring out what clothing and essentials would be most useful for their journey. All of this information is neatly presented in this book.
International travel can be physically demanding, as well as mentally stimulating. For the elderly, the physical and medical concerns might be paramount; but for most adults, the intellectual and cultural challenges can be the biggest hurdles of all. The author explains how to overcome those difficulties, with humor and grace. He illustrates these lessons by examining the idiosyncrasies, as well as surprising similarities, that he and his partner found in the people they encountered, regardless of country or cultural background.
Why a travel book?
I took advantage of an early retirement on a trip that started just to Australia but I had so much
vacation leave that it developed into a sabbatical leave of five months. Now the Swiss started me
off on this writing career which fortuitously was needed for a “physically incompetent varying closely
to being handicapped” individual, who spent all of his working life in a laboratory.
Yes, with one book under my belt, like “Napoleon” – “Neck outstretched, arms locked behind as if to
balance the prone brow” I began to search for the new topics to conquer. During the trip, I started
to send back e-mails to my daughter Tanya, who was the gate keeper of the family home in our absence.
After the first two she wrote me “Dad, you had better send back more of your e-mails of the trip your
friends are asking for more” So the list of emails allowed our friends, family and colleagues to
vicariously enjoy our trip around the world. Many then asked that I give the details of how we could
afford such a supposedly “expensive expedition” knowing our measly earnings and skill of doing so
much “beyond our means” while avoiding bankruptcy. There was no skill other than that of good planning
and fortuitous at the Asian economic meltdown which allowed us to get good deals but most of all
a good travel agent, who followed our trip and gave us continuous back up throughout our journey.
Again the traits of observation, humour, which throughout my life were highly developed by watching
people from different countries also played a role in our enjoyment and ability to cope with any short
comings. We kept our costs down without denying ourselves of any occasion or spoilt indulgence.
Life was wonderful and the book “Around the World on Three Underwear” explains how to enjoy this
lovely, lonely planet with its rich diversity of life forms, physical beauty amidst our stars and
cosmos at large, along with the very human cultures. The countries visited were Hawaii, Fiji, New
Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, UK, and Switzerland.
Buy this book for the reason of a light hearted reading and for its sole enjoyment. But as ageing
individuals with apprehensions, this book also gives us hints on how to travel and enjoy a good trip,
or vacation cost effectively. It also makes great gifts for all ages and events. This author would
like your patronage and donations to continue writing and keeping control of all his books through
self publishing.
